Spotlight on Amore Mio in Clayton, NC
I’m an unapologetic pizza snob. I grew up in Connecticut, and pizza there is the pinnacle. It’s no surprise that I’ve been disappointed in many North Carolina pizza joints, as many use inferior ingredients, load their sauces with oregano and other unnecessary seasonings, and have cardboard crust. I remained hopeful that I would find a pizza pie worthy of my tastebuds.
Today I’m bringing you my personal favorite of all the pizza I’ve eaten in North Carolina so far.

They have incredible specialty pizzas like Pesto & Burrata and Caccio e Peppe, but to test out a pizza place, I always order plain. I want to taste the sauce and cheese without competing flavors. When I tell you I was impressed, amazed even, I’m selling this place short. The sauce is spectacular. San Marzano tomatoes are a must for a sauce I’ll approve, and they nail it. The wood-fired crust is different from anything I’ve had before - fermented, multi-grain dough, light and crispy in all the right places.
Unique and so delicious.
