Spotlight on Raleigh, NC!
Where the Sweet Tea is Strong and the Debates are Stronger!
Y'all, let's talk Raleigh, North Carolina. It's a city that's got it all: a thriving food scene, beautiful green spaces, a rich history, and a genuinely friendly vibe. But beneath that charming Southern exterior lies a vibrant undercurrent of passionate discourse, and I'm not talking politics!
Spend more than five minutes in this fair city, and you're bound to stumble into a spirited debate. It could be over the best barbecue joint (eastern vs. Lexington style, a classic!), the most scenic hiking trail in Umstead, or even the optimal time to visit the State Fair (hint: it's never not crowded, but oh so worth it).
But let's be real, there's one debate that reigns supreme, a topic that can turn the most mild-mannered individual into a fervent orator. I'm talking, of course, about college basketball and football allegiances!
If you're new to the Triangle, buckle up. This isn't just a sport here; it's a way of life, a birthright, and occasionally, a friendly (or not-so-friendly) rivalry that transcends generations.
The Holy Trinity of Sports: UNC, Duke, and State
You've got your three powerhouses, all within spitting distance:
UNC Tar Heels (Chapel Hill): The light blue brigade, steeped in tradition, national championships, and a certain legendary coach whose name rhymes with "Bee Smith." Expect chants of "Go Heels!" and discussions about the purity of the game.
Duke Blue Devils (Durham): The dark blue contingent, known for their fierce competitiveness, another legendary coach (Coach K, enough said), and a student section that can make grown men weep. Prepare for "Let's Go Duke!" and spirited defenses of their aggressive play style.
NC State Wolfpack (Raleigh): The red-clad faithful, with a passionate fan base and a history of underdog victories that makes them fiercely loyal. "Go Pack!" will echo through the air, often accompanied by tales of past glories and hopes for future triumphs.
You see, it's not enough to just like a team here. You're expected to defend your choice with conviction, to recount historical victories (and strategically omit painful losses), and to engage in good-natured (mostly!) trash talk.
Imagine yourself at a local brewery, enjoying a craft beer, when someone innocently asks, "So, who do you pull for?" And just like that, you're in it. You might find yourself arguing the merits of a zone defense versus man-to-man, dissecting a controversial call from a game two decades ago, or passionately explaining why your team's mascot is objectively superior.
It's glorious. It's frustrating. It's utterly Raleigh.
So, when you visit, don't be afraid to jump into the fray. Pick a team (carefully!), learn a few key stats, and be ready to defend your honor. Because in Raleigh, a good debate is almost as satisfying as a warm biscuit and gravy.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I overheard someone talking about whether Krispy Kreme or a local bakery has the best doughnut, and I have some very strong opinions on the matter... Krispy Kreme is trash.
For me, it’s all about Baker’s Dozen where I had the BEST apple fritter of my life. Their fresh donuts get raves from fans all over the area and there is something for everyone.

When I want comfort food, I head downtown to Parkside Restaurant. The Beef Stroganoff hits the spot, especially on a chilly fall day. Their entire menu is amazing, especially if you like carbs as much as I do. From gigantic salted pretzels and elevated grilled cheese to bone-in pork chops and country fried steak, go hungry. Leave engorged.

And I love, love, LOVE Flame Kabob.
This place is so good. The original owners retired, but their head cook took over and it hasn’t changed. The food is incredible. The chicken, koobideh, and beef kabobs are succulent and flavorful. The stews, especially my favorite - ghormeh sabzi - are so delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. A Persian feast you will not forget.

Come for the fun and games, stay for the amazing food!

PS - I still don’t like sweet tea. It’s just never gonna happen.
